Frequently Asked Questions
Will a concrete driveway crack?
Not if it's built properly. Cracking comes from a slab that's too thin, a sub-base that wasn't compacted, missing reinforcement mesh or no expansion joints cut in - all shortcuts that keep a quote low and show up within a year or two. We lay to full depth over a compacted base with mesh throughout, and the whole job is covered by our 10 year guarantee. Is pattern imprinted concrete slippery when wet?
The imprinted texture gives it grip, and the sealer we use holds a non-slip additive, so it performs well in the wet. On steeper drives or where the surface stays shaded and damp we can increase the additive. Keeping on top of moss and algae makes more difference than the surface itself - a wash down once or twice a year is usually all it takes.
Does it need resealing?
Yes, every three to five years. The sealer holds the colour and keeps water, oil and frost out of the surface, so letting it wear off is the quickest way to shorten the life of the drive. What patterns and colours can I have?
There's a wide range - ashlar slate, cobbles and setts, herringbone brick and natural stone effects, in everything from charcoal and slate grey through to buff and terracotta tones. Borders in a contrasting colour or pattern are a common addition and tidy up uneven edges. Should I choose concrete or resin bound?
It comes down to the look you want and how the drive drains. Concrete gives you a decorative stone or brick effect with a huge range of patterns, but it isn't permeable, so drainage has to be designed in. Resin bound is smooth and naturally permeable, which handles the drainage on its own. We install both and we'll give you an honest steer on site rather than pushing one over the other.
