My drive is on a slope. Which surface is best?
Tarmac and resin bound both grip well in the wet and are the usual recommendations on a gradient. Concrete works too, provided we put a non-slip additive in the sealer, which we do as standard on any sloping drive. The bigger question on a slope is not the surface but the drainage, because a steep drive shifts a lot of water fast. We will design the falls and any channel drain in when we quote.
Water runs down towards my house. Can that be fixed?
Yes, and it is one of the more common jobs we get called out for in Dudley. The fix is usually a combination of regrading the surface so it falls away from the property and putting a channel drain across the low point to catch what is left. Where the levels do not allow a full regrade, a permeable surface takes the water down through the drive instead of across it. We will tell you which applies once we have seen the levels.
Is the old mining ground around Dudley a problem for a new driveway?
Rarely, for a domestic driveway. A drive spreads its load over a wide area and does not go anywhere near deep enough to interact with historic workings. What we do care about is what the top metre looks like, because made ground and old backfill compact differently to natural subsoil.
