My drive was laid when the estate was built. Can you resurface it or does it need digging out?
It usually needs digging out. Original estate drives from the 1960s and 70s were laid thin, often with little or no proper sub-base, so putting a new surface on top just inherits the problem underneath. If it is cracked, sunken, or water sits on it, that is the base telling you. We will dig a small inspection hole when we quote so you know exactly what you are dealing with rather than guessing.
Will the clay ground cause problems?
Not if the drive is built for it. Clay holds water and moves with the seasons, which is what cracks a slab or ruts a tarmac surface when the base underneath is too shallow. We excavate deeper on clay sites and compact a thicker stone base, and where the ground drains badly we will either design in a channel drain or steer you towards a permeable surface that handles it without one.
