How Many Block Pavers Per Square Metre?

At Drive Tech UK, we do not specialise in full traditional block paving installations ourselves. Our work focuses on resin bound driveways, tarmac driveways, and pattern imprinted concrete across Wolverhampton, the West Midlands and surrounding areas. Even so, we are often asked how many block pavers per square metre are needed for a driveway or path, and the quick answer is that a standard 200mm x 100mm block usually works out at 50 blocks per m².

That figure comes from simple maths. A 200mm x 100mm block covers 0.02 square metres, so 1 ÷ 0.02 = 50. Some supplier listings also show the same rule of thumb in pack coverage, with 488 standard 200 x 100 x 50mm blocks covering 9.76m², which again works out at 50 per m².

How many block paving per m2?

If by “how many block paving per m2” you mean standard rectangular driveway blocks, the answer is usually:

  • 200 x 100mm blocks = 50 per m²

  • 200 x 200mm blocks = 25 per m²

  • 100 x 100mm blocks = 100 per m²

The exact number changes with the size of the block, so it is always worth checking the manufacturer’s datasheet before ordering. Even small size changes affect the total.

A simple way to calculate block pavers per square metre

We always suggest using this formula:

Blocks needed = total area in m² ÷ area of one block in m²

For example:

  • A 10m² area with standard 200 x 100mm blocks needs about 500 blocks

  • A 20m² area needs about 1,000 blocks

  • A 40m² area needs about 2,000 blocks

That gives you the base quantity before cuts and wastage are added.

Always allow extra for cuts and wastage

In real driveway work, you should never order the exact bare minimum. Cuts around edges, manholes, curves and steps all create waste, and a few blocks can also get damaged in handling.

A sensible guide is:

  • Add 5% for a simple square or rectangular area

  • Add 10% for herringbone patterns, curves, tapers or more awkward shapes

So if your driveway is 20m² and uses standard blocks, you would usually order around 1,050 to 1,100 blocks, not just 1,000.

Why the final number is not always the full story

Quantity matters, but so does the overall driveway build-up. A block paved driveway still depends on the excavation depth, sub-base, edge restraints, bedding layer, drainage and the quality of the finish. That is one reason many homeowners compare block paving with lower-maintenance alternatives before committing.

On our own site, we describe pattern imprinted concrete as a way to achieve the look of brick, cobbles or stone without the higher upkeep of block paving. We also position resin bound driveways as a smooth, permeable, low-maintenance option, while tarmac driveways are presented as strong, reliable and cost-effective.

Our view

If you are trying to work out how many block pavers per square metre you need, 50 blocks per m² is the standard answer for the common 200 x 100mm size. After that, the important step is adding enough extra for cuts and making sure the driveway is built on the right foundation, not just ordering the right number of blocks.
